Support for redevelopment of historic lighthouse on Caledonian Canal 1o August 2010 Highlands and Islands MSP David Stewart has expressed his support for a scheme by British Waterways Scotland and partner The Vivat Trust to redevelop a historic lighthouse on the Caledonian Canal. Mr Stewart said: "I am delighted that British Waterways Scotland and The Vivat Trust have come together to restore the Bona Lighthouse to its former glory. "The lighthouse has been suffering from gross neglect and desperately needs regeneration. "It is worth preserving not only for its historical value in a wonderful setting at Lochend but also because of its potential as a tourist attraction." Mr. Stewart has been campaigning for the renovation of the lighthouse for over two years, after he was contacted by local constituent JF Macleod and his neighbours. The lighthouse apparently evolved from toll houses used in Telford schemes in England and Wales.
