Pledge to fight for future of College 16 February 2011 Highlands and Islands Labour MSP David Stewart has pledged to fight for the future of Cantraybridge College, whose survival is threatened by Highland Council cuts. The college, which was established in 1995, is a company limited by guarantee and a registered Scottish charity. It is also registered with the Care Commission. Cantraybridge is busier than ever with 35 students with a learning disability learning rural skills such as horticulture, agriculture, estate maintenance/woodwork, bird rearing and small animal care and basic adult education and computer skills. The college also provide training in preparation for work and source work placements. It is also an SVQ approved training centre. Cantray Square provides accommodation for 19 students, and currently has a waiting list. However, despite its success, Highland Council is proposing to make cuts to the way the college is funded and ultimately, end funding entirely on March 31, 2012. Mr Stewart said: "I visited Cantraybridge College on Friday and met a number of staff and students. "I saw for myself the valuable work being done there to give young adults with learning disabilities skills for life. "While everyone knows that the council has only a limited amount of money to spend a way has to be found to keep the college open. "I will be writing to Bill Alexander, Highland Council's Director of Social Work, to request a meeting with him to discuss the situation. "I shall also be getting in touch with Highlands and Islands Enterprise to see if it can help with funding the college in any way." Students are selected from within the age group 16 – 30 and are expected to complete their training within a maximum period of 6 years. Students during their time at College can achieve a qualification in one or more subjects. Cantray Square also provides housing with support and is registered with the Care Commission.
