North MSP gains commitment on Barra Air Link
22 January 2010
David Stewart, Highlands and Islands regional Labour MSP, last week questioned
the Transport Minister over the contract for the air service to and from Barra
and obtained a positive response.
Mr Stewart said, "This service is maintained through a Public Service Obligation and the skills of the Twin Otter pilots in landing on a windswept beach, often in severe conditions.
"I asked the minister if he agreed that the three-year contract for the service could impede operators bidding for the route in the future.
" I also asked if he would undertake a review with a view to extending the period of the contract.
" In responding the minister pointed out that EU rules applied to this contract but added he would consider whether a longer contract could be negotiated.
"A crucial point is the availability of aircraft which need to be operational in the longer term.
"The minister had earlier advised that suitable aircraft would soon be available for leasing. "
Mr Stewart added, "The importance of the Barra air link to the local community cannot be over emphasised.
"If we are to sustain populations in our more remote island areas robust transport links, for both commercial and social purposes, must be in place.
" The PSO does protect the service but the contract issue must be resolved to attract airlines willing to operate this life-line service."
