I am no longer an MSP

It’s the end of an era.

I am no longer an MSP and I no longer represent the Highlands and Islands.

I was first elected in 1997 and was the first Labour MP to represent the former constituency, Inverness East, Nairn and Lochaber. After losing my seat in 2005, I re-entered politics in 2007 as an MSP on the regional list.

Retiring feels bittersweet. I have dedicated most of my life to politics and to the Labour party. I’ve met thousands of constituents, worked cross-party with countless politicians, been door knocking through rain and shine and I don’t regret a moment of it. Its time though to move over for new blood.

Its been a privilege to serve Inverness and the Highlands and Islands and I want to thank anyone who has ever voted for me. I would also like to thank staff members past and present who have helped me represent constituents. Rhoda Grant for being my long suffering colleague and the local party who have been by my side.
