Highlands and Islands Labour MSP, David Stewart, welcomed the news that Ministry of Defence is to invest £16.8m on the Western Isles.
The Investment will see two new weapons tracking radars installed on St. Kilda and the upgrading of the radar equipment at the South Uist Rocket Range.
The MSP said, “This is extremely good news and I welcome this encouraging step towards securing the future for the Hebrides base and the local community."
Mr Stewart continued, “This demonstrates that the Western Isles have a huge strategic role to play in the UK’s defence and is testament to the dedication and commitment of both the workforce and the community of the Western Isles.”
The MSP concluded, “It is 60 years since the range was built and it is today still playing a vital role in the security of the United Kingdom.”
